The shell cameos stocked by oagems.com are hand carved in Torre del Greco, Italy, a tradition dating back to at least the 1600’s and were hugely popular in the Victorian era. Typically cameos are carved from the layered shells of the Pink Conch from the Caribbean, the Bullmouth or Red Helmet shell from Madagascar and Zanzibar or the Black Helmet shell from the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Most commercially cut cameos are of ladies heads ... a traditional and popular design. As most shell cameos are hand cut the smaller sizes (8x6mm – 12x10mm) may lack the fine detail of the larger sizes where more intricacy can be created.
